Background

The Mathematics and Natural Science Stream is one of the streams officially launched at Hawassa College of Teacher Education. This stream is devoted to training competent, passionate, ethical and innovative professionals in science education and technology. These professionals aim to contribute to nation’s the socio-economic development through quality education, relevant research and community service.

Currently there are four departments (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology) under the Mathematics and Natural Science Stream (MNS). The MNS stream consists of approximately 73 teachers, 9 laboratory assistants, 403 regular students, and 472 weekend students across four centers (Hawassa, Yirgalem, Aleta Wondo and Bensa) in Mathematics, General Science and Environmental Science.

In total, under MNS Stream there are 875 regular and weekend students under the MNS Stream. The Department of Mathematics is one of the four departments within the Mathematics and Natural Science Stream. Mathematics is essential for students to be equipped with strong mathematical knowledge and skills enabling them to be productive in areas that emphasize rigorous thought and precision of results.

Currently, the department is providing training to a total of 127 students (123 males and 4 females) in two batches for Regular and a total of 30 students (26 males and 4 females) across four centers for Weekend. The Physics Department is one of the four departments within the Mathematics and Natural Science Stream. It consists of 20 teachers (19 males and 1 female) along with 3 laboratory assistants (2 males and 1 female).

Currently, the department offers training in both regular and weekend programs. The Chemistry Department is another department within the departments of Mathematics and Natural Science Stream. Chemistry is primarily an experimental science, with a significant amount of knowledge derived from laboratory research.

This department has 17 teachers (17 males and 0 females) with 3 laboratory assistants (2 males and 1 female). Currently, the department conducts teaching in both regular and weekend programs in two separate batches. The Biology Department is also a part of the Mathematics and Natural Science Stream. Biological issues are fundamental for human life and survival. This department has around consists of 21 teachers (19 males and 2 females) with 3 male laboratory assistants.

Currently, the department is giving offers teaching in both Regular and weekend programs. The Science Laboratories are well organized and equipped facilities within the Mathematics and Natural Science Stream. These laboratories are categorized into Chemistry Laboratories (General, Organic and Analytical laboratories with stores), Biology Laboratories (Microbiology, Zoology and Botany laboratories with stores) and Physics Laboratories (General, Electronic and Magnetic laboratories with stores).

They serve as practical learning environments through investigation and play a central role in community service by providing chemical support to high schools. Additionally, Chemistry and Biology lecturers participated in community service by preparing hand sanitizer during the COVID-19 (Corona) pandemic in 2012 E.C.
